This is a great hike. The trailhead begins at the top of Lake Avenue. You pass through the Cobb Estate, once owned by the Marx Brothers and then cross the riverbed. Once on the other side there are switchbacks that take you deep into the rugged canyon and back out to the ridgeline as you climb up to the ruins of the old hotel. The view of the San Gabriel Valley below is breathtaking. From the ruins you can follow the old Mt. Lowe Railway path, or head higher into the mountains toward Henniger Flats. The trail is rugged in spots so dress accordingly. Go early to avoid the stream of other hikers. Take water, especially in the hot weather. - Gene - rating:5 stars - 2006-03-03
