This is a must do with the family. From the observatory up and back it is a couple miles. On weekends it's busy but the hikers are very friendly and obviously happy to be stomping around. Even the dogs are friendly. A good place to start is at the observatory or on the street nearby. The path is steep in places but the rewards with sweeping view of the Los Angeles basin is worth it. The first stop will be Captain's Roost. The vegetation is recovering nicely after the fire that swept through the area a few years ago. After a short rest go on up to Dante's View. Seriously, take your camera. Even if there is low coastal haze the view is extraordinary. Be sure to stay on the wide paths. There are trails that go off the beaten trail that look like short cuts. Beware. They are nearly vertical and, from what I saw, very difficult. A number of people tried to use them. From the looks on their faces, I could tell they were not happy about their choices. Anyway-enjoy this wonderful outing.
