Unfortunately, this is not a dog friendly hike. Signs are posted prohibiting pets even on leash

Time: Walking slow it takes about 4hrs.30mins round trip (if you're quick it will be 3 or so). Difficulty wise: if you never hike, this will be enough of a work-out. If you're experienced, its a nice stroll. The first 1/2mi has the steepest incline, after that it gets easier. Their isn't a lot of tree cover, so bring a hat, but that makes for good visibility. You will know you are on the trail by the occational sign "Backbone Trail".
Directions: From Pacific Coast Hwy take Topanga Canyon Blvd North. Turn left on Old Topanga Canyon Rd. drive appx 1/2mi, cross a small bridge and you will drive over a set of speed bumps. Park immediediately on the left side. Parking is only avail along the road, there are spaces for perhaps 7 or 8 cars. There is no sign but you will see the start of the trail behind a telephone pole. It leads to a stream, cross the stream (on rocks) and head up the hill.

Loved the hike, wonderful views and a great workout. All uphill (3.6 miles) until the top. Keep going another 0.7 miles to the lookout. Rewarding! Roundtrip approx. 3hrs. 45 min going average speed. - Gwyn - rating:4 stars - 2009-09-13

The only trail-head near this area was called "Back Bone Trail" and there was a "no dogs" sign posted...a sheriff pulled over when he saw us approaching the trail - Katie - rating:1 stars - 2009-08-01

Nice hike. There was nobody on the trail with me and my dog the entire hike. Like Brian said, the trailhead is not clearly marked. As soon as you turn onto old Topanga Cnyn Road look out for two sets of 'road bumps.'Park along the side of the road at the second set of bumps. - Raiza - rating:4 stars - 2009-04-14

Nice hike, watch for that trailhead as it's not clearly marked. Lots of sunshine, wear a hat. - Brian - rating:3 stars - 2007-10-08
