Winnie (my dog) and I love this hike. There are some great shady spots with nice pools/streams to cool you off as you go. The best times to hit this trail is late April to November. Beware, the stream crossings get pretty hectic after the rains. - M&W - rating:5 stars - 2008-11-17

This is one of my favorite areas and all time hikes. You start the trail at the Switzer's picnic area (which is often super busy) and then along the way you can side trip to Lower Switzer Falls and then continue on back into Bear Canyon. Bear canyon in my opinion is the most beautiful section of the san gabriels. You have natural formed pools great for cooling off, beautiful stream and Tree lined with Alders and the like the whole way. Lots and lots of greenery. This is good for the summer time too.
Also of note, at about the 5 mile mark, you come to Bear Canyon Trail Camp, a very large group campsite with fire pits. Used heavily by boy scouts and anyone else who has discovered this gem. This makes for a great overnight escape from LA or Beginning Backpack.
