This is a great hike. The trail begins at the top of Lake Avenue. You pass through the Cobb Estate, once owned by the Marx Brothers and then cross the riverbed. Once on the other side there are switchbacks that take you deep into the rugged canyon and back out to the ridge line as you climb up to the ruins of the old hotel. The view of the San Gabriel Valley below is breathtaking. From the ruins you can follow the old Mt. Lowe Railway path, or head higher into the mountains toward Henniger Flats. The trail is rugged in spots so dress accordingly. Go early to avoid the stream of other hikers. Take water, especially in the hot weather. - Gene - rating: 5 stars - 2012-02-01

Just climbed it today, it's a good hike. Mostly gradual uphill for 2.5 miles, got a good sweat going. I'd strongly recommend you use treking poles, to save the wear and tear on your knees and ankles. There's alot of spots that are uneven and rocky on the trail which throws off your stride and buckles you ankles and knees. Once you get up to the ruins, there are three other trails leading up from there, so you can easily make a complete day of hiking out of this place. Had a good time with great views. We for sure return and bring the wife. Oh yeah and had my little dog with now lease....So Naw!!!!!!!!

One of my favorites!! Trail well maintained and shady till noon. When you get to the top of Echo Mtn (2.5 mi) turn right to see the old hotel and picnic area, and don't forget to try your echo skills off the canyon side(north)of the mountain. If you turn left at the top, your hike will continue along the historic Mt. Lowe Railway path for another 3 miles to the old Alpine Tavern site. People with ipods, please turn them down otherwise you won't hear a number of important sounds...such as approaching bikes, runners or moutain lions.

I did this hike yesterday, 07/26/09. Was my first real hike in the LA mountains. Trail was more narrow than I thought...but has fantastic views all the way to the top. On a clear day, you can see the ocean past the LA skyline. Started at about 3:30 pm and reached at 5:30 pm, downhill took about 1 hour.
Saw the historic railway, Rowe house foundations, tennis court and dance hall signs at the peak. Nice picnic area with shade there. - Chitradarshan - rating:3 stars - 2009-07-27

Fantastic views, the "White Castle" is a cool place to end the hike with plenty of historic markers to read. Bring a lunch and have a picnic at the tennis court/picnic area. I use this as a training run, but beware, this is a multi-use trail. This means UNLEASHED DOGS. I've been pushed off the trail a couple of times by enthusiastic canines while their owners look on with a smile on their face. - James - rating:5 stars - 2006-10-26
